Second Grade Schedule/Guidelines

Daily Schedule

9:05-9:25- Social Emotional Learning

The schoolwide community circle topics are created by Doug and our Career Ladder Teachers.  Here are some resources for family conversations if you are interested.

9:25-10:35- Math

While you are deciding which math games and fluency practice to focus on here are the second grade standards to help you decide which games work best.  I also sent a chapter 1-4 review test, the students can look at these math problems as a template to create their own by switching up the numbers.  Or work on your ‘spicy’ math challenge packet that is also included in the orange folder.

- Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one and two-step word problems

- Fluently add and subtract within 20 mentally

- Use addition to find total numbers of objects arranged in rectangular arrays (info video on arrays-

10:35-11:00- Making Meaning

Usually a read-a-loud and class conversation demonstrating a reading strategy or concept.  Currently we are studying non-fiction texts and specifically features of these. How to use them and why they are useful eg. glossary, table of contents, index.  The skill that we’re working on is how to use books to answer our specific questions even when we do not read the entire text.

- Use wondering to make sense of expository nonfiction texts

- Explore text features of expository nonfiction

- Describe how reasons support points an author makes

- Identify what they learn from texts

- Build a body of knowledge about animal life

11:00-11:15- Recess

11:15-12:00- Reading

Students read individually while I either conference with individual students or work with small groups. At conferences I gave you a guide to improving reading at their level.  I am happy to email the document to you again.  Although I have not started my F&P testing to see their exact level this Spring yet, I can provide you with my best guess and the corresponding informational document if you feel this will help you.

I also do read-aloud at this time every other day.  This provides a great community experience of sharing a story.  I bet in two weeks you could make some headway on a good chapter book together.
