3/10/20 - Message from Principal Sohn

Updated: Mar 14

Original message from Tuesday, March 10th. Some info may be out of date.

Dear Adams Elementary School Families, We all care for your children so much and want them to be healthy and safe, so we are being extra diligent in having them wash their hands often, and we are using hand sanitizer when it's more practical. We know that there is a shortage of sanitizer in Seattle at the moment, but we do have enough right now to get us by for a while. That said, if you have extra sanitizer and would like to donate it to Adams, we will use it. If your child is showing any signs of illness, we request that you keep your child home. If we call to have you come pick up your child, we will appreciate if you make it a priority to do so since we can, at times, have quite a few students waiting to be picked up, as was the case on Friday. We are using two rooms now to care for students who come to the office when they are not feeling well. One room (the Nurse's office) is for students who might have a cough or fever,  and one room (Mr. Sohn's office) is for students who have any other symptoms, such as a stomachache or nausea. Regardless of which room we use, whenever we hand off a student to a family, we take a moment to clean the space using a virucide/bactericide. If you are in a higher risk group (60 years and over; pregnant; people with weakened/compromised immune systems or underlying health conditions, such as heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes) we would be happy to walk your child out to the outside area near the doorbell/security camera. We would be happy to do this for anyone, actually. Event Cancellations We regret to have to tell you that as of yesterday (Monday) all evening events at the school are canceled except after school care provided by KidsCo. and the before and after school clubs/classes.  To be clear, the Before and After School classes are still operating. All field trips and assemblies are canceled, as well, unfortunately. This includes the Global Reading Challenge, Islandwood and the choir performance. The Islandwood cancellation is going to be really hard on the 5th graders, so we are hoping that we can all think of something to do for them in June. The directive from the district is that all field trips are canceled. I've been asked about walking field trips, like to Thistle Theatre. The directive did not mention any exceptions, so we are operating on the assumption that we will have to cancel these types of field trips, too. We will let you know if this changes. Resources to Access at Home The Adams teachers have put together the following list of websites and other resources that you may want to use with your children at home, particularly if you end up having your children at home for any length of time. The list is by grade levels, but the first section is for the sites that have resources for every grade level. Please contact your child's teacher if you do not know your child's logins and passwords for the sites that require them.
